Low, I screwed up

“Low, I screwed up, I said ok to the salary offered during interview but I should have asked for more.”

Salary is always a tricky discussion, especially if you’ve already said yes to it.

Changing your mind after saying yes highly affect your credibility and leave a negative impression.

This is why you should always go into the interview with a clear ASK in mind.

But before you ask for your desired salary, make sure you’ve showcased the following in sequence:

👉🏻What have I done
Share your past roles, responsibilities, and experiences, including the problems you were trusted to handle, and the environments you’ve operated in (startups, corporates, cross-functional work, etc.).

👉🏻What achievements I’ve gotten
Highlight measurable outcomes such as revenue generated, costs reduced, targets exceeded, etc

👉🏻What skills I’ve acquired
Identify technical and soft skills you’ve developed through your experiences (leadership, communication, problem-solving, analytical thinking, project managemen, etc). This shows your growth and your readiness to take on greater responsibility.

👉🏻With these transferable skills, what value can I bring to your organisation
Connect the dots for the interviewer. Explain how your experience, achievements, and skills can directly solve their problems, support their goals, or strengthen their team.

After highlighting the above, that’s when you can talk about your salary.

If you come in and ask for a salary directly, that’s when your interview can go very wrong.

Show what value you can bring before you ask what are you valued!

All the best for your interview!
